[0:03] Well this is my favorite episode of the series. It's... the Crystal Cave is an element of Arthurian legend that I've loved and I've been dying to see it brought into the series

[0:28] Eh... anyway the great way(?) it's that time-old dilemma of not being able to stop the future, it's inevitable. Merlin thinks he can. He sees visions of Morgana killing Uther and he goes about stopping that and at one point in the episode, he believes that he has but the future cannot be, cannot be altered or if it is, it is done in the wrong way.

[1:00] and it's a kind of race against time. It.. it turns into this, ehm a dramatic adventure, I think, for Merlin psychologically, ehm, as to, as to how he can try and stop the future, and it's about it becomes about all those for him, it becomes all those emotions and upset and he can't see that happen. ehm but yeah. It becomes evident. He can't change the future.

[1:25] One of the huge revelations in this episode is that Morgana is Uther's daughter.

[1:43] I mean this, this changes everything, everything for Merlin. I mean If.. if she was to die ehm.. it would, it would, it would change the future in the wrong way. He should... That's all he wanted to do. He wanted to change the future but he didn't want to see this happen. And ehmm. to have her, to have her gone and it doesn't, it doesn't fit in with the jigsaw of a happy future and uh... and Merlin goes about to change this. Ehm... We can see Merlin ignoring the advice of the dragon, ah so, in this episode, he commands him, he tells him, this is, this is the way it has to be. He, he, he uses, I guess, the ability as a dragonlord, that he has power over the dragon. It's a new sort of way into their relationship although he's ignoring his advice as such.

[2:44] and he does take it on board, but uh but I think now he, I think Merlin very much now realizes he can say "this is how it is to be" and the dragon kinda has to take his advice.

Colin Morgan: He has to uhm, literally poison a friend, you know, kill a friend, ehm, but for the greater good. It’s… (Smiles) It’s not an easy decision.

Katie Mcgrath: He can either save Camelot or let me live. So in order to save Camelot and Arthur and the Once and Future King, he has to kill Morgana.

Johnny Caps: Does he poison somebody that he, in a way, cares about but is suspicious of or does he let her live and therefore let the rest of Camelot die? Either decision is really difficult for Merlin.

Katie Mcgrath: He kills her because he believes he had to and he kills her because Morgana’s magic has taken her somewhere that his magic never would and Merlin and Morgana can’t be friends because of that. They started all from the same place but they’ve gone completely opposite directions and their friendship isn’t going to come back from that.

Johnny Caps: And we liked that because, you know, let’s push Merlin into uh, making a very very difficult decision and it is an awful decision that he has to make but there is hope there for Morgana because Morgause takes her away and there absolutely a sense that Morgause will save Morgana. And that creates for us a delicious dilemma because when Merlin gets to meet Morgana again, what would her attitude be towards Merlin, what would her attitude be towards Camelot, and what has Morgause been telling her?

Colin Morgan: It was important to get that right and uhm Jeremy Webb and director was great because he uh completely pushed us and spent the time on it.

Katie Mcgrath: I hope I never have to do it again. It was horrible. I made Colin cry, well I made Merlin cry but it’s the same thing.

[0:02] Morgana's character is the one that has had to make the hugest leap, ehm, i think over the whole three series coming to this point.

[0:18] She has literally gone to the dark side. Her character has flipped completely. And for Katie herself, I think she enjoys playing the baddie. it's good that her and Emilia have a really good relationship and this two kind of witches working together. Obviously their motives are hugely dark. Eh for Merlin, that's... it's no surprise at this stage but if you take them the way they were. I mean they were friends to begin with and he wanted to change her, he wanted to show her the right path and that magic is an ability that you have and it's how you choose to use it. She has on more than one occasion, ehm, proved that that's not her intentions, that her path and his are not the same path and that their paths are in direct conflict.

[1:33] Ehm there's... she has taken advantage of the fact that she has got this lineage with the, with the throne, with the king and that's very much she has got her sights set on the throne and that's where she's gonna be and that's where she is at the end of the episode is we end on that cliffhanger.

My final question for you is, do you have anything lined up that you’re looking forward to doing, or that you’d like to do? Yeah, I always want to be looking ahead. I’m starting a new project in January. For me, it’s about finding the stories that you enjoy and want to tell. I know immediately when I read something if I really respond to it instinctively and it seems like the right thing. That’s what I want to do. I want to be a part of good stories, intriguing characters and work with positive people.
